affordable sunglassesThe longest bike trail in the United States also contains several sites of historical significance. The Underground Railroad Trail spans more than 2,000 miles, stretching from Mobile, Alabama to Ontario, Canada, and has plenty of opportunity for outdoor adventure along the way.

This trail begins in Mobile, Alabama, which was a busy port for slavery during the 1800s, and follows some of the rivers that were used by slaves to find points further north. Along the way, there are several historical markers, parks and visitor’s centers that will provide you with more information about the Civil War and the Underground Railroad in General.

A few of the sites to see along the route include:

  • Blakely State Park in Spanish Fort, Alabama, which is the site of the last major battle of the Civil War
  • Shiloh National Military Park in Shiloh, TN, which is also the site of a major Civil War Battle
  • National Underground Railroad Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio
  • The Rankin House in Ripley, Ohio, a major Underground Railroad Station

The trail is broken up into five different “legs” of around 400 miles each, so you can break your trip up into smaller sections if you would like. The first leg extends from Mobile, Alabama to Fulton, MS, and is around 401 miles long. Leg 2 runs from Fulton, MS to Owensboro, KY, stretching around 435 miles. From Owensboro, KY to Milford, OH, Leg 3 is 373 miles long. Leg 4 begins in Milford, OH, and extends for 418 miles to Erie, PA. The final leg is 378 miles long, and reaches from Erie, PA to Owen Sound, ON.
