It doesn’t have to be summer for you to enjoy a trip to the beach. That’s especially true in Virginia Beach, as there are plenty of outdoor adventures for you to enjoy all year round. Here are just a few you can take advantage of, regardless of the season.
Fishing-Virginia Beach is known for being one of the best fishing spots on the East Coast. In winter and early spring, you can catch sea bass, grouper and tile fish, while summer is perfect for snagging drum, bluefish, trout and flounder. In fall, go angling for tuna, swordfish and black bell rose fish.
Bird Watching-Explore the Seashore to Cypress Birding Trail to spot everything from warblers to northern gannets. In the fall, you can even see thousands of snow geese and ducks making their annual migration. There are quite a few scenic areas along the trail that are worth spending time at as well, including the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center and the Bay Back National Wildlife Refuge.
Horseback Riding-Several outfitters offer horseback riding on the beach in fall, winter and spring (it’s much too crowded during the summer for this). Rides range from 30 to 90 minutes in length, and are suitable for all members of the family. During the summer, you can enjoy pony rides and hay rides at some of the stables, or may even take riding lessons if you choose.
Kayaking-There are more than 120 miles of navigable waterways and 35 miles of coastline in Virginia Beach, making it a kayaker’s dream destination. Add to the fact that over 18,600 acres of land surrounds these waterways, and it makes kayaking here especially attractive any time of year. Kayaking can be enjoyed year round, and is an excellent way to get away from the crowds that often frequent the beaches.
