The weather is changing, ski mountains are opening up, and it's time to break out the coats and jackets again! If you enjoy winter sports, there’s no place better to visit than Northwest Montana. The Flathead Valley is the perfect location to enjoy a number of outdoor sports and activities. If you're tired of visiting the same mountains every winter for your favorite snowy sports and activities, maybe it's time to visit Montana!
There are plenty of opportunities for downhill skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort, which is located at the “Big Mountain.” This resort contains 9 chairlifts and three surface lifts to make getting to and from the slopes easier. There are ski trails for beginning, intermediate and advanced skiers alike, making it ideal for a family getaway.
Blacktail Mountain Ski Area is also located here. It contains 24 runs, the longest of which is 1.75 miles long. The base elevation is 5,236 feet, while the top elevation spans more than 6,789 feet. A Snow Sports School is also located here, providing alpine skiing and snowboarding lessons to people of all ages.
If you’d like something a little more laid back, you can take advantage of the hundreds of miles of cross country skiing trails found within the Flathead National Forest or Glacier National Park. Before heading out, be sure to call the Glacier Country Avalanche Center at 406-257-8204 for avalanche warnings to ensure you are safe.
If skiing isn’t quite your cup of tea, you can still enjoy a multitude of other activities, a few of which include:
- Ice fishing
- Stand up paddle boat tours
- Camping inside the historic Tamarack Lodge and Cabins in Hungry Horse
